US President Donald H. Trump said Tuesday that he hopes to hold a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un after the latter expressed his willingness to meet the White House leader at any time.
“I’m also looking forward to seeing Kim, who is well aware that North Korea has great economic fundamentals, ”
Trump said in a tweet on Twitter.
The North Korean leader said in a New Year speech that he was ready to meet with Trump at any time, warning him at the same time that Pyongyang will not change its approach if Washington keeps its sanctions on its regime.
Kim’s warning came a year after the diplomatic rapprochement between Pyongyang and Washington began.
“If the United States does not abide by its promise to the world, we may have no choice but to consider a new way to protect our sovereignty and our interests.”
Kim said in a speech broadcast.
Kim was ready to meet with Trump at any time, saying:
“I am ready to sit again with the US president at any time in the future and I will make efforts in every way to achieve a result welcomed by the international community.”
But Kim stressed that the United States and South Korea should not conduct joint military exercises, describing the drill as a “source of tension.”
Seoul said in a rare letter sent to South Korean President “Moon Jae in” that he would hold frequent meetings with him in 2019 to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
In 2018, Kim took a series of restorative initiatives, most notably his historic summit with Trump in Singapore in June.
At the historic summit in Singapore, Kim pledged to disarm his country’s nuclear capabilities but without agreeing on details or on a specific timetable.
To date, no progress has been made in pushing North Korea to give up its nuclear arsenal, at a time when Washington and Pyongyang are exchanging accusations of procrastination and bad intentions.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed his hope two weeks ago for a second summit between Trump and Kim on “New Year’s Day.”
